Cakewalk is great fro both recording and MIDI. Vegas by SONY is a really kewl program, does both Audio AND Video.
Nuendo, Cubase and whatever else is out there are all good in their own way too. I am work with SONAR3 by Cakewalk and just started using Vegas and am really liking the power behind it.
As to price, you just have to look around unless you are really good at using Mirc channels and can find a cracked version. They are out there.

Don't forget about Digital Performer from Mark of the Unicorn. Performer has been around forever as a MIDI sequencing program. The audio support is great as they have tons of hardware expansion options. I was at a session a few months back and everything was being recorded with Digital Performer and had the functionality of ProTools.

    Just another option.

They all pretty much behave the same. I engineered on Nuendo 2 in August and it was a breeze.

But my main kit is Reason 2(as a 'slave') Rewired to Abelton Live 3(as the 'master'). Plus a few plug ins (mainly T-Racks for mastering).

Im gonna stick with this configuration as i've seen friends blow major $$$$ on software and peripheral hardware only 2 be bogged down by manual hell, then eventually selling most of what they bought because they believed EVERYTHING they read in any home recording magazine.

All i really need now is a powerful laptop, a midi controller, and a proper USB/Firewire/Mic box thingy. Also a premium set of mics.

After aquiring all that, i will never have 2 go to a studio again.

    A decent $$$ investment(personal studios)that every drummer should be lookin 2wards.

    all my best.........beats.

Thanks for the info so far, really appreciate it. I am pretty new to this kind of software and i figured that you guys were up on this stuff. I would be running my V-Drums through it mainly, instead of my acoustic set. What are the learning curves to some of the software mentioned (especially to someone who is pretty new to it in general). Has anyone ever run V-Drums through it, and if so how was it?

I am sure you guys are pretty in-the-know about this type of stuff judging from the wealth of knowledge that exists on this page. I was wondering if anyone could offer any good suggestions about composing, writing, mixing software (hopefully under the $400 (US)dollar price range). Whether it be Cubase, Reason, Cakewalk, etc. Any input at all would be really appreciated.

The main question about using the VDrums is do you want to use them as MIDI triggers, record the events, tweak them, and the play back through the brain? Or, play realtime and record the SOUND coming out of the brain, more like a traditional recording session?
